In early December 2018, Trinseo’s Hong Kong office made donations to two volunteer agencies to support their efforts in sustainable recycling. Trinseo advocates sustainability in its product portfolio and in the development of its customers' products. Sustainability and caring for the environment are at the core of everything the Company’s values.
Soap Cycyling, one of the beneficiaries, not only manages recycling, but also uses recycled and sanitized soaps, shower gel and shampoo in bottles to help the underprivileged by recycling them to reduce preventable hygiene-related diseases and suffering. By distributing this life-saving resource to where it is needed the most, they help the public develop a greater awareness of up-cycling and maintaining a greener lifestyle for the betterment of the environment. Over two million bars of soap are thrown away each year by hotels in Hong Kong. By collecting this soap, Soap Cycling also helps eliminate thousands of pounds of chemical waste from the landfills each month. Trinseo Hong Kong’s donation supports, for two consecutive years, the MEY (美) Program of Soap Cycling, a new work-integrated social enterprise initiative for Minority, Elderly, and Youth (MEY). The MEY (美) Program provides meaningful employment opportunities to these people who will in return get a chance to lead and be empowered, in addition to a fair wage to take home for their time and work.
Terence Ip, Integrated Business Services Director, APAC presented the donation cheque to Soap Cycling.
Another beneficiary, the Missing Link – Polyfoam Recycling Scheme focuses on recycling used polystyrene (PS) foam materials, such as boxes and wrappers from markets. The PS foam waste material is cleaned and re-manufactured, and then sold as a raw material to manufacturers for the production of other plastic products, including remote control casings and photo frames, thus giving the PS foam waste a second life, extending its entire life cycle. The Missing Link also organizes educational booths to promote the recyclability of PS foam waste to the general public. Trinseo’s donation will primarily fund the scheme’s safety training.
In addition to supporting the work of the two institutions, Trinseo hopes to enhance the public's awareness of the importance of recycling and encourage their participation in environmentally-friendly and sustainability-related volunteer work.
