Trinseo Releases 8th Annual Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility Report

Trinseo (NYSE: TSE), the global materials company and manufacturer of plastics, latex binders, and synthetic rubber, today has published its 2018 Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Report, which showcases how Trinseo is meeting or exceeding the highest standards of safety and environmental performance, and developing innovative solutions that benefit our world. Titled, “Purpose, Performance, Progress,” the report is Trinseo’s eighth since the company’s formation in 2010.

This report is significant because it is the first in the company's history to use the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) framework for public sustainability reporting, and was granted status as a GRI-Referenced report.  The Global Reporting Initiative is the leading independent organization that provides a common language and framework for public sustainability reporting, allowing more global comparability and better quality of information about company sustainability impacts.

With this milestone achieved, Trinseo has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, integrity, and accountability in its global reporting.

During the full year of 2017, Trinseo continued its trend of reducing its environmental footprint, as measured by a range of environmental performance indicators. Since its first report in 2011, the company achieved a number of notable reductions in its environmental footprint, including:

  • Electricity usage, down 10%
  • Water consumption, down 29%
  • Greenhouse gas emissions from sources that are owned or controlled by Trinseo, down 24%
  • Total waste, down 41%

The 2018 Sustainability and CSR Report profiles how the company’s products help its customers improve their own sustainability in areas such as vehicle lightweighting to improve fuel efficiency, green tire technology, medical device design flexibility and parts consolidation, home appliance manufacturing, LED horticulture lighting, and more. The report also outlines Trinseo’s programs in product quality, safety, ethics and compliance, volunteerism, and Responsible Care®.

“We remain focused on Trinseo’s purpose – delivering innovative and sustainable solutions across our entire product portfolio – and continually improving safety and environmental performance across our global operations,” said Chris Pappas, President and CEO. “Every employee plays a role in our accountability, and together we are advancing Trinseo’s progress in becoming a more transparent and sustainable company.”

The report also details Trinseo’s record environmental, health, and safety (EH&S) performance. Trinseo’s recordable injury rate for 2017 was 0.29, a rate that is significantly lower than other manufacturers and American Chemistry Council (ACC) member companies.

“At Trinseo, sustainability and corporate responsibility are intrinsic to who we are,” said Walter van het Hof, Global Industry Affairs and Sustainability Leader for Trinseo. “With this report, we begin the adoption of the Global Reporting Initiative framework, and we expect to present a fully compliant GRI report next year.”
